Mrs Gallagher – Principal
Dear Families
Welcome back to Term Two which always promises to be a very busy term.
Cold Weather
As the mornings get colder, could you please remind your children to wear a jumper or jacket! I often become concerned when children tell me they do not feel cold when there is an icy cold wind blowing and they are just wearing a T-shirt. Warm school pull overs and school uniform jackets can be purchased at the Lowes store in Ocean Keys for a reasonable price and that store is open 7 days a week. Please make sure that any item you purchase is clearly labelled with the family surname with permanent ink.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Our school is strengthened by our unity in every child wearing our school uniform proudly. All parents support our school by making sure their children are in uniform. THANK YOU!
Sickness
The winter season brings with it the potential for the spread of germs within the School. In order to keep this spread to a minimum, we would ask that you keep your child/ren at home if they are sick. If your child has a sore throat, temperature, runny nose or gastro symptoms they must not be sent to school. We must be doing the right thing for everyone.
Kindy 2024 Enrolments
Kindy Enrolments are now due. If you have not yet enrolled your child for Kindy in 2024, or have friends or family in our local area, please come along to East Butler to complete an application form. You will need to bring up-to-date Immunisation records available from MyGov, two forms of proof of address and a Birth Certificate.
School Development Day
On Friday 2nd June, the school will be closed to students because there is a School Development Day. That is the day when staff are able to get together and formulate plans for the school and to upgrade their knowledge in certain areas.
Thank you for observing this day.
WA Day
On the Monday 5th June, we will be celebrating WA Day. This is a day when families can discuss the meaning of WA day and enjoy family time together.

Pocket Forest
Our sustainability leaders are doing an amazing job taking food, shredding paper and turning the compost. Dr Grey from Murdoch University stated that our compost heap is the best and has the most worms amongst the schools who are currently creating a pocket forest. If you have any grass clippings, leftover food of any kind which you would usually place in the bin, you are welcome to drop these off at school to add to our compost. We need to double our compost by the end of June so any help is appreciated.
Manager Corporate Services
Thank you to all the families that have paid their 2023 Contributions. These funds support your child’s education by enabling the school to purchase extra materials, services and resources. Although the school receives funding for the curriculum, it does not cover the extra learning materials purchased by the teaching staff.
All voluntary contributions received are directed straight back into the classroom, further enriching your child’s educational opportunities. The more contributions we receive, the more we can offer the children – so every penny counts. It equates to .86c per week throughout the year or $1.50 per week based on the school term days.
Payments can be made via
- EFT
- Cash, or
- Directly deposited into the School Bank Account.

Special News: Sustainability - Community Gardens Visit
Last week, as a result of our excellent school sustainability program, we were exclusively chosen to receive a visit from landscape architect Costa from Gardening Australia. Also in attendance was Tracey Roberts MP and a big group of the Community Garden team.
Costa came to the Community Gardens to share his passion for sustainable gardening and generations working together as he saw our students working together with members of our local community. Costa also talked about the benefits of the wonderful Seeds in Schools program where schools will receive seed libraries to grow heirloom vegetables, companion plants, bush tucker and flowers. This program helps students to learn about environmentally sustainable gardening, promote healthy eating and improve wellbeing.
It was awesome!!!
Also, our students have been very busy pickling and bottling olives!

Walk to School Day
What an amazing event held last Friday 19th May. It was wonderful to see students and their families taking part in our Walk to School Day and enjoying a muffin and milo after being active to get to school. Special thanks to Mrs Barter, Mrs Utley, Mr Rooker and all members of the P&C. Councillor Glynis Parker attended this special event and commended East Butler on such a wonderful and welcoming event.
Old MacDonalds Farm Visit
Old MacDonald’s Travelling Farm Incursion
Last week our students in Rooms 6 and 7 participated in an Old MacDonald’s Travelling Farm Incursion. This was our hook for the Talk 4 Writing Program, for our writing genre of Reports. The students had a fabulous time and enjoyed seeing all the animals.
The students chose an animal and completed the “Fact Finding Worksheet” on their animal.
In the coming weeks, the students will learn the basics of fact finding/researching, that will then be applied and used when we commence Report writing about animals.
Students will then create a booklet on their chosen animal.
Swimming Lessons
East Butler Primary School will be participating in In-term Swimming Lessons this year during the first 2 weeks of term 3 (July 18, 2023, to July 28, 2023).
Learning to swim is a vital skill for all West Australians and we encourage all our students to attend. Please look out for the forms coming home, have a good read and return the forms and payments ASAP. We will consider payment plans if needed. Thank you for your time and support.
Breakfast Club
Remember, Breakfast Club is on every Tuesday and Friday and all students are welcome to come along. Tuesday is toasties and Friday is spaghetti on toast. The gates open at 7.45am and last food is served at 8.05am. The students go to classes at 8.15am when the rest of the school gates open!
We hope to see many more of you at breakfast club in the coming weeks!
Free Emergency Laundry Service
We understand that these are tough times and are aware that there can be occasions when your washing machine breaks down and it’s difficult to get things clean. We have been able to acquire the emergency laundry service which will be located at the back of the school near the OSH club in the car park on Tuesdays. You can bring 1 bag of essential items that need washing and our fabulous volunteers will wash and dry your belongings with detergent for you. There is no need to sign into the office, it is a discrete service open to our community who need it.
The van will be here on Tuesdays from 10:30-12:30 each week. Please enter through the back gate to use this wonderful, free service.
We look forward to continuing to support our community in many ways.

ACT, Belong, Commit
Act Belong Commit
For those of you not aware, East Butler Primary School is a proud member of the State Government Act Belong Commit program. It is a holistic approach to being mentally healthy!
The mental health message of Act-Belong-Commit encourages children and young people to deliberately do things to look after their mental wellbeing. Keeping mentally and physically active, having good friends and helping others or learning new things not only builds self-esteem and confidence, it also can reduce stress and help with academic outcomes.
Act – walk, swim, read, do a crossword puzzle…
Belong – join a group, chat to a neighbour, meet a friend…
Commit – take a challenge, get involved, volunteer…
Mindful May is nearly over but here is a really good mindful activity to practice at home!
Doing a guided body scan is a type of meditation. The process involves deep breathing while scanning your body from head to toe and noticing where you might be holding tension. The body scan meditation can promote body awareness, stress awareness, and relaxation.
We recommend doing this with your child to connect them to their bodies
We also recommend parents do their own body scan too, try this one!
Tip # 6
Connecting with nature helps us to recover from stress and mental fatigue, helps us relax and puts us in a good frame of mind. So next time you feel like you need a lift; tend to your garden or explore your local park; you might like to go for a walk along the beach or take a moment to enjoy watching the waves.

Late for School?
If you have students who arrive late for school please sign them in at the office on the Ipad and ensure they collect a late slip to hand to their teacher. This will update the system and ensure that you do not receive a text message advising that they are absent from school.
